Itinerary

1st Day: Guwahati Airport; Railway Station to Shillong; Transfer

Approximate Distance: 100 km

Est. Travel Time: 3 hours

  • Upon arrival at Guwahati’s airport or train station, take a transfer to Shillong, also known as the “Scotland of the East.” Shillong, which is also the capital of Meghalaya, is the only hill station in the country that can be reached from every angle. Shillong, which is located 1,491 metres above sea level, takes its name from the mighty deity U-Shyllong. The city is situated in the centre of a plateau and is surrounded by hills. This beautiful city is located 103 kilometres from Guwahati.
  • Shillong houses a large number of highly regarded educational institutions, many of which were established by various missionary organisations, making it the educational hub for the entire northeast. Along with its natural beauty, Shillong serves as a gateway to Meghalaya, a region known for its incredible people, tallest waterfalls, caves, and beautiful landscapes. A major centre for education for the entire northeastern region is also quickly developing in Shillong.
  • Visit the magnificent Umium Lake en route (Barapani). Here, you can engage in water sports (optional). You can also participate in a variety of adventure sports, including skiing, kayaking, and scootering. Lumpongdeng Island is the name of the island on the opposite side of the lake.
  • Visit your hotel to check in after you arrive in Shillong. The largest local market, the Police Bazaar, is open in the evening.
  • Stay the night in Shillong.

2nd Day: Shillong to Cherrapunjee, Excursion

Approximate Distance: 60 Km

Est. travel time: 2 hours

  • Drive to Cherrapunjee (4,400 ft.), the wettest place on earth, after an early breakfast.
  • The north-eastern Indian state of Meghalaya contains the hill station of Cherrapunjee. Cherrapunjee, which is 1430 metres above sea level, is well known for having a lot of rain. The closest village, Mawsynram (about 15 km away by air), has the highest rainfall in the entire world. This location is relatively close to both the Bangladeshi plains and the Bangladeshi border. Cherrapunjee is surrounded by stunning hills and valleys that draw numerous visitors from both inside and outside of India.
  • The stunning waterfall known as Nohkalikai will be visible. One of India’s tallest waterfalls, Nohkalikai Waterfalls, is just 5 kilometres from the main town. This waterfall, which cascades from a height of 1100 feet, is one of Cherrapunji’s most well-liked tourist destinations.
  • You can also explore the Mawsmai caves. The cave is also well-known for having fossils, some of which can be seen if you spend some time inside gazing at the formations and walls. Meghalaya is home to all ten of the country’s longest caves, in addition to others.
  • Return to Shillong in the evening; stop at Elephanta Falls en route.
  • Stay the night in Shillong.

3rd Day: Shillong to Mawlynnong and Dawki (excursion)

Approximate Distance: 120 Km

Est. Travel Time: 4 hours

  • Drive to Mawlynnong, “Asia’s Cleanest Village,” after an early breakfast. Mawlynnong is a village in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills region. In 2003, Discover India named it the “cleanest village in Asia.” The living root bridge and the strange natural phenomenon of a boulder balancing on another small rock are just two of the intriguing sights that can be found in Mawlynnong.
  • Continue the journey on to Dawki, a small town close to the border with Bangladesh. The fascinating Umngot River, also known as the Dawki River, which has water so clear it might be mistaken for see-through glass, is what makes Dawki the most well-known among tourists.
  • Returning to Shillong in the evening.
  • Spend the night at your Shillong hotel.

4th Day: Shillong to Guwahati: Sightseeing and Transfer

Approximate Distance: 100 Km

Est. Travel Time: 3 hours

  • Check out of the hotel after breakfast and visit the Don Bosco Museum (closed on Sundays). The museum features tools, clothing, and artefacts that highlight the indigenous people and culture of the area.
  • You can then go to Ward’s Lake. It also goes by the name Pollock’s Lake (Nan Polok), after a well-known engineer from the pre-independence period. It is thought to be close to a century old.
  • After that, take a drive through Guwahati, the state capital of Assam and the location of the renowned one-horned rhinoceros.
  • When you get there, check into your hotel. It is recommended that guests take an optional tour of the Golden Sunset Cruise on the Brahmaputra in the evening (direct payment by the guest).
  • Stay the night in Guwahati.

5th Day: Guwahati Local Sightseeing

  • Breakfast is followed by a trip to Kamakhya Temple (note: timing is 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. until it gets dark). One of the holiest shaktipeethas (religious shrines where Goddess Sati’s severed body parts fell) is believed to be the temple, which is where the goddess’ womb is said to have fallen. It represents supreme female power and fertility as a result.
  • You can also go to Tirupati Balaji Temple, the Assam State Museum (closed on Monday), the State Zoo and Botanical Garden, Nabagraha Temple, and the Regional Science Centre.
  • You can then go to the Sukreswar Temple. It is the sixth Jyotirlinga of India and is housed in the temple, which is famous for it. A person who performs post-death rituals at this temple is said to achieve “moksha,” or peace for the dead, according to a widely held belief.
  • You can take a river cruise on the mighty Brahmaputra in the evening (direct payment).
  • Stay the night in Guwahati.

6th Day: Guwahati Hotel to Guwahati Airport or Railway Station (Transfer)

  • Visit the Kamakhya Temple after breakfast (timing: 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to dusk).
  • For your next destination, transfer to the Guwahati airport or railway station.
  • (Note: The timing of your visit to the temple will depend on it. It might have been completed the day before)
