Karlovy Vary, or Carlsbad in English, dates back to the Medieval Ages and is nestled in a gorgeous, wooded valley in western Bohemia. It has a long-standing reputation as a spa town and is home to the warm-water Tepla River, 300 small springs, and 12 larger ones. See the legendary Grand Pupp Hotel, one of the town’s most striking structures and the location of Daniel Craig’s famous poker session in the James Bond movie “Casino Royale.”
Visit the visually spectacular municipal theatre and marvel at the craftsmanship of the builders who created this masterpiece. Continue your stroll around the town and let its lovely and symmetrical collection of colonnades transport you back in time. After breakfast at the hotel, the rest of the day is free for you to explore. Visit a silver city and a church of bones on this intriguing tour to the mediaeval town of Kutná Hora. Kutná Hora, which was established in the 13th century and is renowned for its silver mines, was once the wealthiest and most influential city in Bohemia. Despite suffering through war, fire, and the depletion of the silver mines, Kutná Hora is now recognized as a Unesco World Heritage site for its exquisite architecture and historic significance, as you will see when wandering through the town’s historical centre.
Next, we visit the magnificent St. Barbara Church and the Bone Chapel, which was constructed in honour of the patron saint of miners which was formerly a mint and a royal palace. Look up inside at the vaulted ceiling and exquisite murals that show the town’s mediaeval life. See the historic royal mint that created the Prague groschen, the old-style hard money of Central Europe. Read about the significant economic contribution Kutná Hora made to the nation, which led to King Wenceslas IV establishing his royal palace there.
After that, we visit Sedlec Ossuary, also known as the Bone Chapel, where the interior is entirely adorned with the remains of up to 70,000 individuals. This unusual ossuary was built by a half-blind monk tasked with excavating the overflowing graveyard in the 14th century. It contains creepy artefacts like candelabras, chalices, and coats of arms. Even a chandelier made of every bone in the human body is present. There’s no denying that Kutná Hora’s enchanting old town ambience, gorgeous architecture, and horrific past make for a compelling combination. Overnight stay in the Prague hotel.
